PMBOK® Guide — 7th Edition · §4.4.2–4.4.4
Methods II — Estimating, Meetings & Other
Methods to approximate work, time and cost; the meetings & events that drive communication; and a handful of other widely used methods.
Estimating methods§4.4.2 · approximate work / time / cost
Affinity grouping — classify items by likeness (T-shirt sizing, Fibonacci).
Analogous — use historical data from a similar activity/project.
Function point — estimate business functionality in software (FSM).
Multipoint — weighted average of optimistic/most-likely/pessimistic.
Parametric — algorithm using historical data & parameters.
Relative — compare against similar work; often unitless (story points).
Single-point — one best-guess value (vs a range).
Story point — abstract, relative effort for a user story.
Wideband Delphi — rounds of expert estimates + discussion to consensus (planning poker).
Meetings & events§4.4.3
Backlog refinement — (re)prioritise & elaborate the backlog.
Bidder conference — align prospective sellers before bids.
Change control board — review/approve changes.
Daily standup — short sync on progress & blockers.
Iteration review — demo & inspect increment.
Iteration planning — plan the upcoming iteration.
Kickoff — align the team at the start.
Lessons learned — capture knowledge to reuse.
Planning — develop or refine plans.
Project closeout — formally close work.
Project review — assess status / phase gate.
Release planning — plan what ships when.
Retrospective — reflect & improve ways of working.
Risk review — reassess risks & responses.
Status — report current state.
Steering committee — senior governance & decisions.
Other methods§4.4.4
Impact mapping — link deliverables to goals via actors & impacts.
Modeling — represent a system/idea to explore it.
Net Promoter Score® — gauge willingness to recommend.
Prioritization schema — MoSCoW, multicriteria weighted analysis.
Timebox — fixed period to focus and limit work.
Many methods aren’t listed because they’re used the same as in other disciplines (interviews, focus groups, checklists) or are industry-specific.
