Uncertainty

Navigate the unknowns. Explore, assess and respond to uncertainty in its forms — ambiguity, complexity, volatility & risk — and build resilience so the project still delivers value despite what it can't predict.

Visual Map — Four Faces of Uncertainty (on a base of Resilience)

GENERAL UNCERTAINTY — limited understanding of events & conditions Ambiguity Unclear · many readings Respond: clarify, prototype, experiment Complexity Many interacting parts Respond: systems thinking, decouple, iterate Volatility Rapid, unstable change Respond: reserves, options, iterate, flex Risk Uncertain event, + or − Respond: threat & opportunity strategies RESILIENCE — capacity to absorb impact & adapt (buffers · options · redundancy)

Different faces need different responses: clarify ambiguity, simplify complexity, buffer volatility, and respond to risk — all standing on resilience.

The Forms, in Words

  • Ambiguity: unclear or multiple interpretations → clarify, prototype, progressively elaborate.
  • Complexity: many interacting parts & emergence → systems thinking, decouple, Cynefin/Stacey.
  • Volatility: rapid unpredictable change → reserves, alternatives/options, iterate.
  • Risk: uncertain event with +/− effect → threat & opportunity responses (see Risk posters).

Build Resilience

  • Capacity to absorb impacts & adapt — sometimes to gain from disorder.
  • Levers: reserves, optionality, redundancy, modularity, fast feedback.
  • Surface unknowns early and keep options open.
  • Cross-links: Risk responses, EMV & decision trees (Posters 11–13).

Exam Concepts

  • Ambiguity vs complexity vs volatility vs risk — and each response.
  • Risk = positive or negative.
  • Cynefin for complexity; reserves for volatility.
  • Resilience & building in options.

Executive View

  • Invest in resilience & optionality.
  • Manage the portfolio's aggregate uncertainty.
  • Reward surfacing risks early, not hiding them.

Industry Example

Defence & Start-ups
  • Defence: high complexity & ambiguity → systems engineering. Start-ups: volatility → options & short cycles.

Interactions & Checking Results

  • Pervades all domains — esp. Planning (reserves), Project Work (change), Measurement (forecasts).
  • Good signs: uncertainty understood & actively managed, threats down, opportunities captured, resilience built.
